If you live within walking distance of 50th & France, the district you strolled last Labor Day is not the district you are strolling tonight. Four storefronts changed hands in the last twelve months, a fifth is under construction, and a single restaurant group now has its name on three of the marquees. The Friday concert series still ends at 7:30 p.m. and the parking ramps are still free, but the choice of where to eat before or after has been rearranged in a way that is worth pausing over.
The thesis is simple: 50th & France is no longer a district of independent operators sitting side by side. It is becoming a district anchored by two hospitality groups with a distinct point of view, and the pace of that shift is faster than most residents realize.
The del Prado Consolidation
Thérèse, chef and restaurateur Daniel del Prado's snug new French restaurant at 50th and France, opened in Edina under his mother's name, and it is only the opening move. Thérèse is the first of three restaurant concepts del Prado has in the works at 50th and France.
The second is going in one block south. Americana, at 5036 France Ave. S. in Edina, will replace Cocina del Barrio by fall 2026 and will feature a glass-enclosed rooftop patio and a redesign by Christian Dean Architecture, with Barrio owner Ryan Burnet teaming up with del Prado for the third restaurant in their partnership. That project is not without friction. A city ordinance requires Americana to add 14 off-street parking spaces to ensure there's enough room in the city's public parking ramps for all businesses at 50th & France. The third concept has not been named, but the pattern is now clear. For a district built on independent restaurateurs, one group holding three addresses is a genuine shift in gravity.

- 3934 Market Street — Bellecour has returned at 50th & France, with a lighter design of bamboo and tan colors and a 12-piece map of Place Bellecour behind an oversized lounge area. Same pastry program you remember from the original Wayzata location, different hot menu.
- 5036 France Ave. S. — Cocina del Barrio out, Americana in by fall 2026.
- 5034 France Ave. — General Sports Bar, a new sports bar from the team behind Nolo's, will open this summer in Edina inside the former Salut restaurant space, with more than 25 televisions.
- 3948 W. 50th Street — Smith Coffee & Cafe, an Eden Prairie shop, will open a second location in Edina in the former D'Amico & Sons space, with a menu including coffee drinks, pastries and breakfast items.
- Southdale Center — Restaurateurs Sharon and Randy Stanley, of Baldamar and 6Smith, plan to open Smithson, a steak and seafood restaurant, in Southdale Center in fall 2026. Not 50th & France proper, but close enough to affect a weeknight dinner decision.
That is five confirmed concept changes inside roughly one calendar year. If you have lived here through prior turnover cycles, you know the district usually absorbs one or two openings a season. This pace is different.
Friday Nights Still Belong to the Plaza
The one piece of the summer rhythm that has not been rewritten is the concert series, which is exactly where you should send visiting family if you want the district to feel like itself. The free concert series returns on June 12 and runs into September, with the Friday night parade of bands and singer-songwriters running through Sept. 4. Each night of the series will have headliners hitting the stage from 6:15 to 7:15 p.m., as well as a student opener playing from 5:30 to 6 p.m., all at The Plaza at Nolan Mains.
"I'm thrilled to bring the 50th and France Summer Concert Series into its sixth season," says concert series organizer Anna Devine. The sixth season is the tell. In a district where the storefronts are turning over on an annual cycle, the concert series is the through line, and it is worth planning your Friday around it. Edina Liquor sponsors a beverage garden for 21-and-over guests with views of the stage, restaurants in the area offer grab-and-go dinner options so concertgoers can eat out on the plaza, and free parking is available in the North, Center and South ramps.
The practical implication of the restaurant shuffle is that your grab-and-go rotation is due for an update. The Bellecour tartine, the Thérèse bar menu, and a Coalition takeout order are all now within a two-minute walk of the stage.
What's Coming a Half-Mile West
If you have driven past the fenced-off public works site at Eden Avenue and wondered when something was actually going to happen there, this is the summer. Groundbreaking on the Grandview site is expected summer 2026, with a mixed-use, three-acre spread at the southeast intersection of 50th Street and Highway 100 that will include owner-occupied housing and a yet-undisclosed anchor restaurant by Jester Concepts, the hospitality company known for Butcher and the Boar, P.S. Steak, and Rustica Bakery. Preliminary designs call for 38 townhomes and 32 condo units, all owner-occupied.
Two things are worth noticing here. First, the second major restaurant group staking out territory in the 50th & France ecosystem is Jester, which means the district's next chapter is being written by exactly two hospitality players with strong identities. Second, the housing product being proposed is owner-occupied townhomes and condos, not the rental buildings that have defined most of the neighborhood's recent construction. At this Edina site, there is a strong preference for other types of housing, especially ownership units like townhouses, condominiums or cooperatives, and proposals with primarily luxury and market-rate rental housing were a low priority.
For residents already in the district, the near-term consequence is construction traffic on Eden Avenue. The longer-term consequence is that the walking distance between the concert plaza and a full second dining anchor is about to shrink by a half-mile.
What This Means for Your Regular Rotation
If you have a standing 50th & France routine, it is due for a small audit. The four practical shifts:
- The dinner-before-concert loop is longer. Thérèse, Bellecour, and Coalition are now three distinct French-leaning options within a block, which is more concentrated culinary overlap than the district has ever carried. Rotating between them is a real summer decision.
- The Barrio corner is quiet through fall. If you were counting on the patio there for a July dinner, plan on Americana not being open until late 2026 at the earliest.
- The old Salut space is now a sports bar with 25-plus TVs. That is a different Friday evening character than the wine-bar-and-boulevardier scene that preceded it, and it is closer to the concert plaza than any prior sports venue in the district.
- The old D'Amico space becomes a morning stop. Smith Coffee opening at 3948 W. 50th changes what a Saturday walk looks like before the fair traffic picks up.

Taken together, they mean the district has quietly moved from a collection of independent operators to something closer to two curated portfolios plus a rotating cast.
